Homemade pizza made for an awesome mid-week meal last week. Living here in Chicago, of course there are tons of options for ordering pizza, but I thought it would be fun to give it a shot myself. I couldn’t decide on just one, so because I’m pretty much a walking gluttonous pig, I thought I’d go ahead and make 2. Yaayy! You see, I look it at as my god-given right to eat as much pizza as I can possibly stuff in my hungry pie-hole. And by Georgie – I’m gonna do it.
Because I’ve (still) never baked anything from scratch with yeast, I didn’t make my own crust. I’m sure that will be a future project, but for now, I used ready-made crusts from the good folks at Boboli. For the first pizza, I used pesto instead of the traditional red sauce. Man, oh man, oh man. On top of this I added fresh chopped basil, arugula, roma tomatoes and topped it all of with slices of fresh mozzarella.
I made the second pizza with a traditional red marinara sauce. To this I added grilled and sliced chicken sausage with thinly sliced onions and shredded mozzarella.
I cooked them both together, right on the rack. That proved to be a mistake with the pesto pizza, as the oil in the pesto heated up and started dripping all over the bottom of the oven. The place filled up with smoke – and of course the smoke alarm went off. I hate that initial feeling when multiple things are going wrong at once – smoke is starting to pour out of the oven, I needed to open the windows and then that ever-loving alarm starts going off.
But everything was fine – 5 seconds of “oh-dear-lord” panic turned out to be nothing. We got the windows open and the smoke alarm knocked off the ceiling with the battery temporarily removed. Nothing burned and smoke cleared out in less than a minute. And they came out wonderfully. I honestly don’t know which I liked better – they were both very different with equally amazing flavors.
Like 2 sides of a delicious coin. A big pizza coin with tons of cheese and homemade goodness. Susan B Anthony ain’t got nothing on this!
